Entry #117 - SXSW II PDF Print E-mail

sxswIIJocelin and I really enjoyed our first SXSW experience.  Riding our bikes around town and hanging out at the different venues listening to unknown bands was fun.  We were able to meet up with random friends at different locations, and we even ran into several people we knew on the streets.  The only thing I wish was different was that there would've been a better way to search for bands by genre, because Jocelin and I would've liked to hear more Blues/Jazz/Hip Hop instead of all the Rock/Alternative Rock.  But whatever.  It was all free.  What can you expect?

We also went to the house party next door with the two bands from the UK.  We went with a few people from the Stone (Phillip, Sharon, Shawn) and it was fun to meet everyone, hang out, and EAT ALL THE FOOD.  Chef Lugany cooked up a TON of great BBQ.  At first we were kindof nervous going over there, but then it was pretty obvious that no one knew ANYONE, so it was perfectly natural to walk up to someone and be like, who are you?  I'm Marcus.  Not only did we meet all members of The Cheek and GoldieLocks, but I also met some other interesting characters like (1) Derek, a band manager person who supposedly managed Elton John at one point and (2) Jason, the manager of the gentleman's club down the street called Expose.  Here's a funny conversation between me and Jason:
Jason: Hey, I'm Jason.
Marcus:  Whassup, man.  I'm Marcus.  So... how do you know these people?
Jason: I don't.  I know the DJ and he invited me over here for a few beers.
Me: Cool.  So, what do you do?
Jason:  I manage a gentleman's club down the street.  It's called Expose.  What about you?  How do you know the people here?
Me: I'm the neighbor.
Jason: Oh, so you DO know Expose!
Me: Uh... I don't KNOW Expose.  I know OF Expose.  But I don't KNOW Expose...
Jason: Here you go, here's my card, and these will work as two free admissions into the club.  You should come by sometime.
Me: Ok... Uh, thanks.  So... how come you're not working right now (because it was like 9pm at night and prime time for his club)?
Jason: I work during the day.  Plus, I'm having some problems at home with the wife, so I wanted to get away...
Me: Yeah, I would guess that a job like yours would be an issue with the wife...  BTW, do you know Jesus?  (I'm kidding. I didn't say any of this last line...)

We also went to the private, invite-only, Red Bull Moon Tower Party on Friday night.  For some reason we were excited about going, probably because it was invite-only and we felt like we were in the "cool" club for once.  Jocelin even put on her "new" Ann Taylor leather pants that she got at the thrift store for $4 (another post for another day).  Katia the Red Bull Manager from the UK told us to arrive early because it was going to be crowded with 17,000 people on the guest list, so we got there around 10:30.  When we finally got to security, to my dismay, we WEREN'T on the list.  I was SO super annoyed.  I was like, how did she mess this up?  I SAW her type our names into the computer.  How did we NOT get on?

Of course they were super strict and turned us away.  I was embarrassed, but more annoyed and angry.  I couldn't call Katia because she had an international number and my stupid Sprint phone wouldn't make international calls.  With our tails in between our legs, we left and came home.  I was actually upset for a while, maybe because I drank a Red Bull before we left (my first one EVER) so I would be able to stay up, and now it was 11:00pm and we had nothing else on the evening agenda.  I was so upset that I actually lost sleep over this!  And I even told Jocelin, this is so stupid.  A week ago if you would have told me about this party I would have been like, who cares, I don't want to go.  I'd rather stay home and X (insert anything here).  But now I was upset about not being on the guest list.  How silly.  I told my sister about it, and she accurately coined this, "L.A. Syndrome", where everything is invite-only, and if you don't get on the guest list you feel like shunned and rejected.  It was totally "Entitlement Syndrome," where I felt like I deserved to be on the list because someone promised I would be, and when I wasn't, I was mad about it.  I couldn't wait to make Katia feel bad the next day...

So I talked to Katia in the morning and she was VERY apologetic.  Apparently alot of people weren't getting on the list, and she made some calls to make sure we were on the list for Saturday evening, when The Cheek and GoldieLocks were playing.  We finally ended up making it into the party on Saturday night.  It was fun, but definitely not something we would do more than once a year.  We got home at 3am and slept until noon.  Here's a picture of the set and of Jocelin's tattoo (entrance pass).

Sounds super fun, bro. Need a pic of Joce in the leather pants. This I have to
see. Dude, I think I'm the only one who reads your blog now. Everybody else is
on FB or Twitter.

I'm a little late reading this entry, but couldn't agree w/ you more on the
"L.A. Syndrome." Sean traveled to L.A. for work once and couldn't
believe how pretentious a lot of people were.

Hope all is well with you and
Joce!
