penguinsYou know how when you go on wildlife excursions, you're not sure if you're going to see what you're supposed to see?  We've seen SO much wildlife, it's been amazing: Humpback whales, Minke whales, Gentoo Penguins, Adelie Penguins, Chin-strap penguins, Weddell seals, Leopard seals, Elephant seals, and all types of birds that I couldn't care less about.  Here in Antarctica, it's not a matter of IF you will see X, Y, and Z, but WHEN and HOW MANY you will see.  That's really cool because my sister and I are both legally blind and we always miss out on what everyone else can see.  For example, on our cruise to Alaska in 2007 everyone was on the top deck watching a grizzly bear on land.  Everyone was like, look!  See it?  Can't you see it?  It's right there!  Awesome!  So cool!  And my sister and I were like, uh, we can't see nuthin'.  Our eyes suck.

But I AM getting pretty tired of watching penguins.  It was really cool at first to be able to hang out with them, but after you've seen 204,536 of these little creatures, you're ready to see something else.  I am especially tired of penguin guano.  It stinks very much bad.  And it is EVERYWHERE.  I'm walking through it all the time, and it's just grody.  I've observed penguins for so long now that I've seen them defecate on land AND in the water.  Imagine taking a bottle of mayonnaise and giving it a good squirt - that's what it looks like when a penguin goes #2.  Right now all I want to do is pick up a penguin and punt it.

Since there are only 60 passengers on the boat, we eat all our meals together at the same time. There isn't assigned seating, so you can just sit wherever you want with whomever you want.  There are people from all over the world, including: Russia, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Czech Republic, England, and the US.  Some people are really interested in meeting others, but I'm not one of those people.  I mean, people are actually exchanging emails and addresses and stuff.  I'm like, seriously?  C'mon.  You're never going to email/call/write - ever.  You're just fooling yourself.  So it puts me in a really awkward spot because we see the same people everyday over and over, but I'm not talking to you because I don't really care.  I'm never going to see you again, so why waste my energy making small talk?  It's not the best attitude in the world, I know, but whatev.  The expedition crew told my sister, your brother is really shy, isn't he?  I thought that was funny.

I'm really surprised by how many people here are traveling alone.  It's absolutely fascinating, really.  I've been sitting around trying to figure out how people can muster the courage to travel all the way to Antarctica by themselves.  I'm not kidding you, probably 15 people on this trip are here alone, and I'm not talking about single people traveling together or in a group.  I'm talking about people who flew to the southernmost city in the world and stepped on this ship without knowing a single soul.  There is even one lady in her 70's who came completely by herself!  I'm just really impressed that there are people like this, especially since Jocelin can't even go to the gym by herself.

always the highlight of my aquarium trip.
