surgery Wow!  I can’t believe it’s Friday already, and I haven’t had a chance to blog about my surgery.  Sorry to all those who have been waiting to hear back from me.  My days go by so much quicker now that I’m not really doing anything…  sad!

Anyways, you can praise God that my surgery went smoothly.  Marcus and his sister Renee kept me company until I got wheeled into the operating room, and then they stayed in the waiting room until I woke up.  Renee was my medical consultant.  Marcus was the comic relief.  ☺  The surgery took a little less than 2 hours to complete, and I woke up shortly after in the recovery area.  I remember waking up (I had been dreaming about hiking) and wondering where I was!  And then I remembered I was having surgery.  It took me a second to realize that I in fact had already HAD surgery and was back in recovery.  I got a shot of Demerol, took a Percocet, ate some crackers and cranberry and apple juice, changed into my clothes, got some instructions from the nurse while she took out my IV, and then left the surgery center right after that.  Pretty fast if you ask me!

I have had an incredibly smooth recovery since then, so praise God for that too.  Obviously, He heard your prayers.  I was prescribed some Vicodin for pain, but did not need to take any of it this week.  I was able to survive on some Tylenol the first night and Advil the second night.  I’ve been sleeping really well (maybe too much) and was even able to go to our weekly bible study on Tuesday night.  It was good to get out of the house and see friends that I hadn’t seen in awhile!

The rest of the week has been restful at times and busy at times, but overall, restful.  Marcus’ mom has been in town all week and it’s been awesome!  She’s been grocery shopping, cooking, doing our laundry, dishes and even cleaning out and reorganizing our pantry.  She is quite the taskmaster (that’s where Marcus gets it from).  So I have been able to get rest and recover quickly.  Even Marcus has been getting a break from his usual chores.  Thanks, Mom!

My surgeon called on Wednesday (a lot sooner than I expected) with the results from the surgery.  She had some good news and some bad news.

  • Good news:  All 3 lymph nodes removed were clear of cancer cells, which means the cancer has not spread yet.
  • Bad news:  There were still some cancer cells in the margins of the tissue they removed, and they actually found 3 other types of cancer cells that we didn’t know about.
  • Good news:  The 3 other types of cells found are considered “pre-cancerous” and are not growing rapidly nor are they spreading or likely to spread right now.
  • Bad news:  I will need to have a mastectomy of my right breast to ensure that all the cancer and pre-cancerous cells are removed.
  • Good news:  I shouldn’t need radiation, and I get to have breast reconstruction (a free upgrade, according to Marcus).  ☺
  • More good news:  After speaking with my oncologist this week, I may not need chemotherapy.  I will need to have some more tests done in order to better determine the need.  But that makes me happy!

When will all this happen?  We are still working out details with the doctors, but what we do know is that I will be having surgery sometime in September after our trip to Vegas and Zion National Park.  (Yes, we have another vacation planned and are not canceling it!)  ☺

Marcus and I were a little disappointed at first when we heard that I would have to have surgery again, but overall we are still confident that God is in control and have peace, hope and joy in this.  God continues to be our strength!

Marcus and Jocelin, you may not quite remember us, but we are the old ACC folks.
We just wanted to let you know that we'll continue to remember Jocelin's health
in our daily prayers. God is faithful and good and He is our strength.
